MURDER

Attorney Karp has defended more than twenty persons and businesses charged with various murder-related offenses. The vast majority were charged with first degree murder. In fact, Attorney Karp’s current case load includes several persons charged with first degree murder in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In Massachusetts, there are several homicide charges: First degree murder is an intentional killing performed with deliberate premeditation, or extreme atrocity or cruelty, or while in the commission of certain felonies. It carries a sentence of life in state prison without parole. Second degree murder is an intentional killing that does not fall within one of the three categories of first degree murder. It carries a life sentence (with an opportunity for parole after 15 years). Voluntary manslaughter is a killing performed under the heat of passion upon reasonable provocation or sudden combat, or the use of excessive force in self-defense. It carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison. Involuntary manslaughter is, general speaking, a killing performed recklessly. It carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison. Vehicular homicide is the killing of a person while operating a vehicle negligently or recklessly, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in state prison.

Attorney Karp also investigated and prosecuted murder cases while employed as an Assistant District Attorney in Boston. While in that position, he was a member of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Homicide Response Team during which he assisted law enforcement officials and homicide detectives at live murder scenes in Suffolk County (Boston, Revere, Chelsea and Winthrop). So, Attorney Karp has an “insider’s “ perspective when defending persons charged with murder.

Defending a person charged with murder, whether it be first degree murder, manslaughter, or vehicular homicide, requires an aggressive attorney that is well-schooled in various forensic sciences such as DNA testing, latent fingerprint testing, ballistics testing, cause of death determinations, toxicology testing, and accident reconstruction. Attorney Karp has vast experience in these areas as both a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor. In fact, Attorney Karp was only the second Assistant District Attorney to present a jury with DNA testing evidence that was performed by the Boston Police Department DNA Laboratory which was established in 1998. He also has substantial experience defending persons using a diminished capacity/mental health/insanity defense in murder cases.

The bottom line is Attorney Karp has a proven track record in defending persons charged with murder offenses.
