If you or a loved one is accused of, charged with, or being investigated for, sexual assault you must be defended aggressively at the earliest possible point in the case. No matter how confident an accused may be in his innocence, all sexual assault charges must be defended vigorously because of the huge ramifications it may have on an accused’s freedom and future. If convicted, a person will forever be stigmatized as a “sex offender.” Persons convicted of sex crimes in Massachusetts, including a second conviction for something as minor as “open and gross lewdness,” are subject to lifetime parole and registration as a sex offender. The Sex Offender Registry may be viewed online by anyone. Registered sex offenders often have great difficulty in obtaining employment and housing because of their inclusion in the Sex Offender Registry. The defense of sex crimes is not an area for a general-purpose criminal defense attorney. Sex crimes are unique in many ways and require specialized, proven defense strategies by an attorney with specific experience in this area of law. The attorney must be well-versed in forensic sciences such as DNA testing, toxicology testing, criminalistics, serology, trace evidence, and human physiology and anatomy. Attorney Karp worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Boston where he prosecuted numerous sex crimes. He worked closely with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (“SANE” nurses) and understands the protocols that must be followed when they collect evidence from an alleged victim of a sex crime. Attorney Karp knows the strategies of the prosecution and sexual assault detective and uses that knowledge to his clients’ advantage. Attorney Karp’s success in defending persons charged with sex crimes also derives from his use of nationally recognized DNA experts, toxicologists, pharmacologists, and investigators. He has expertise in issues that often arise at the trial of sex crimes such as the so-called “first complaint” doctrine and jury selection issues unique to sex crimes.
